Late delivery: can I claim installer charges?

You may recover a wasted visit or cancellation charge if the UK seller breached the delivery agreement and the loss was caused by that breach, foreseeable and not reasonably avoidable. Advance notice and itemised records help, but reimbursement is not automatic. Discuss factory and shipment records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the purchase and the delivery promise

A business owner buying fittings personally for their home should ask Trading Standards to confirm whether the purchase qualifies as a consumer transaction. Check the order’s purpose and contracting seller using our home-purchase guide. For fittings bought for business premises or a commercial project, start with UK seller supply terms and ask an adviser to assess the contract.

For a consumer purchase, delivery remedies preserve other remedies where available. An installer charge needs its own justification: the loss must result from the breach, be sufficiently foreseeable and exclude loss you could reasonably have limited. Compare the agreed arrival date with actual delivery. Our essential delivery date guide explains the separate question of ending the goods contract and obtaining a refund.

Explain installation plans before ordering

Before committing, tell the seller which fittings the installer needs, the installation date and the required delivery date at your address. Explain the installer’s cancellation terms and potential wasted-visit charge. Ask the seller to confirm the delivery commitment in writing. Keep its response with the order; an unanswered message leaves uncertainty about what was agreed.

Suggested wording: ‘These fittings are needed for the installation booked on the date shown in the attached confirmation. Please agree delivery to my address by the stated deadline. Missing it may cause the attached cancellation or wasted-visit charge. Please confirm before I order.’ If the booking changes, update the seller promptly and preserve the original correspondence.

Prove the charge and why delivery caused it

Keep the seller’s delivery promise, delay notices, tracking records and actual arrival confirmation alongside the installation booking. Ask the installer for an itemised invoice and a written explanation of why the visit was wasted or the booking cancelled. Include the cancellation terms supplied when you booked, payment evidence, and whether the charge remains unpaid or disputed.

Explain which missing goods prevented the work. Ask the installer to distinguish unavailable fittings from other obstacles, such as unfinished preparation or access problems. Separate the wasted charge from installation work you would have paid for anyway. Record any deposit transferred to the replacement booking, waived charge or refund, and deduct these from your requested compensation.

Reduce avoidable costs when delay becomes likely

Consumer damages cannot cover loss you could reasonably have limited or mitigated. As soon as delay becomes likely, contact the seller and installer. Ask whether the booking can move without charge, whether the installer can use the slot elsewhere, or whether useful work can proceed without the missing fittings. Keep dated records of the answers.

Check the installer’s cancellation deadline before allowing a visit to go ahead. Request a reliable delivery update before confirming the replacement appointment. If postponement or another option is impractical, record why and retain supporting messages. Do not add optional upgrades or unrelated renovation costs to the wasted-visit claim.

Send a separate, itemised compensation request

Write to the UK contracting seller with the order reference, agreed delivery commitment, actual events and installation charge. Attach the advance notice, installer’s terms, invoice and mitigation records. State the net amount requested, explain each deduction and identify the supporting document for each entry. Keep any goods refund separate from the installer-cost calculation.

Suggested wording: ‘The agreed delivery was missed, preventing the attached installation booking. I notified you of the booking and charging terms before ordering. The installer charged the attached amount. I tried to reduce the loss as shown in the correspondence. Please reimburse the net loss or explain which facts or costs you dispute.’ Set a response date. For unresolved claims, use our complaint and court guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does late delivery automatically mean the seller pays my installer?

No. A consumer damages claim depends on breach, resulting loss, foreseeability and reasonable mitigation. Send the delivery agreement, installer charge and supporting correspondence.

Must I tell the seller about installation before ordering?

Tell it before ordering and ask for written confirmation. Include the booking date, required arrival date and charging terms. This helps show what the seller knew; it does not guarantee payment.

Can I claim if the installer has not been paid?

Include the invoice and booking terms, explain that it is unpaid and identify any dispute. Ask the installer whether the charge can be waived or credited. Have an adviser assess a disputed liability.

Can I claim the full replacement installation bill?

Separate extra costs caused by the delay from installation costs you would have paid anyway. Deduct refunds and credits, and explain why each remaining charge arose.
