Getting started

Must importers put their home address on products?

You may be able to use another contact address, but check your product's rules before printing it. A genuinely reachable address is a starting point, not proof that every regime accepts it. Review product labels and marketplace disclosures separately. Factory label checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the address rule for the actual product

Start with the product, intended use, destination and business whose details would appear. Record what the applicable guidance says about the address, whose address it must be and where it belongs. Check Great Britain and Northern Ireland separately, as explained in our conformity marking guide.

Our product labelling guide covers electrical equipment and toys, including importer identification and permitted placement alternatives. Use it for the placement question. Here, the additional task is to assess whether the proposed contact address suits your product and actually reaches your business.

Do not treat every address service as suitable

For food, official labelling guidance says the address must be a physical address where the business can be contacted by mail. For cosmetics in Great Britain, the Responsible Person guidance excludes mail-forwarding and post office box addresses from a UK established address. These examples show why a postal service needs a category-specific review.

Describe the proposed arrangement precisely: your own premises, shared premises, a warehouse or an address provider. Ask what the service actually supplies. If the official wording leaves its suitability unclear, take the product details and service agreement to Trading Standards or a competent product compliance adviser before approving artwork.

Test whether correspondence reaches you

Get written permission to use the address with your exact business name on product labels. Ask who receives letters, how they notify you, whether they forward originals and how urgent product safety correspondence is escalated. Send a test letter using the proposed label wording and keep the delivery and forwarding record.

Check what happens during staff absence, a missed renewal or the provider closing. Agree who monitors incoming correspondence and who acts on a safety complaint. Treat successful mail handling as practical evidence of reachability; it does not settle whether the address meets the applicable product rule.

Review marketplace disclosures separately

Keep separate checks for product labels, public seller information, returns instructions and details requested privately by the marketplace. Read the current seller requirements and preview what customers can see. Our marketplace seller information guide covers that separate review.

Do not take account approval as evidence that your product label is correct. Equally, do not assume an address chosen for a product label answers every marketplace question. Ask the platform which information is displayed publicly, which is used for verification and how changes are handled.

Approve the arrangement before printing

Keep an address approval record with the applicable official guidance, your proposed business identity, the service agreement and the reachability check. Record any unresolved question and its resolution. Put the approved text and location into your product specification so the factory works from the agreed version.

Ask for photographs of finished goods with the actual retail packaging and enclosed documents. Compare them with the approved wording. If you later change address providers, review existing stock and future artwork against the relevant guidance before arranging changes. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate these factory checks through its staff in China.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a virtual office address on imported products?

Assess the actual service against your product's rules. Check permission, mail handling and reachability. Cosmetics guidance excludes mail-forwarding addresses from a UK established address for the Responsible Person.

Can I use a post office box on product labels?

Do not assume it is suitable. Food guidance requires a physical address where the business can be contacted by mail. Cosmetics guidance excludes post office box addresses from a UK established address.

Can importer details go on the packaging instead?

Check the product rule with Trading Standards or a competent product compliance adviser. Confirm whether importer details should appear on the equipment and when packaging or accompanying documentation may be used instead.

Does marketplace approval mean my address is compliant?

Use separate reviews for the account and the product. Check the product's address rule, then check public seller disclosures and the platform's verification requirements.
