How to export surgical sutures from the UK to China
For sutures managed as medical devices, arrange filing or registration before import and prepare Chinese labels. The UK manufacturer retains its own application. Cambridge China Bridge uses its own staff in China to find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands.

Complete the medical device application before import
Surgical sutures and dental materials managed as medical devices must already be filed or registered before import: class I requires filing, while classes II and III require registration. The UK manufacturer must take responsibility for its own application and supply the supporting material. The process takes months, not weeks; the Chinese authority decides.
HMRC recorded £15.0m of UK goods exports to mainland China under HS 300610, 300640 in 2025 (2024: £12.9m, +15.7%). Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £61k. January to July 2026: £8.8m against £7.2m in the same months of 2025 (+21.2%).
The largest UK export line was 30061090, sterile suture materials including sterile absorbable surgical or dental materials, at £13.2m in 2025. These are HS-line totals. For an imported class I device, the overseas filer designates a mainland legal-person company to submit the filing, including proof from the home country's competent authority that the device may be sold there.
Build Chinese border taxes into your price
Chinese tariff lines 30061000 and 30064000 each have a 5% MFN rate. Import VAT generally applies at 13%, subject to the statutory exceptions, on customs value plus customs duty plus any consumption tax. The importer's customs broker or adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to these materials. Border taxes increase landed cost and shape the price an importer can offer.
| Chinese tariff line | Rate |
|---|---|
| 30061000 | 5% |
| 30064000 | 5% |
Prepare Chinese instructions and label artwork
Imported devices must have Chinese instructions and Chinese labels; devices without them may not be imported. The instructions must identify the origin and give the name, address and contact details of the mainland legal entity designated by the overseas registrant or filer. Prepare the artwork and these details with the manufacturer and licensed partners before arranging stock for China.
Prepare the UK export documents
Classify the sutures or dental materials under the correct UK commodity code. For exports from England, Scotland or Wales, obtain a GB EORI and arrange the online export declaration with the goods' value, weight, packaging, destination, transport and invoice and packing list references. The carrier needs the invoice and any applicable export licences or certificates.
You may need an MHRA Certificate of Free Sale for these devices. Check the requirement for the particular product before arranging shipment. The MHRA certificate does not verify compliance with China's import rules, so it cannot replace the Chinese filing or registration work.
Check the cross-border list exclusion
The cross-border e-commerce retail import list partially covers this category through Chinese line 30061000, but its remark excludes goods managed as medical devices. That entry therefore provides no retail route around device filing or registration for regulated sutures. Have the importer and licensed partners establish the product's regulatory status before considering this channel.

Find and check a Chinese importer
Our own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands. If an importer has already approached you, our staff check that company before stock is sent or anything is signed.
For this category, we help only with preparation, finding and checking a Chinese importer, and coordinating licensed partners. We prepare registration and label work with licensed partners in China and check with them. The importer of record and other regulated roles stay with licensed partners in China; your own filings stay yours. Our export service supports this preparation.
