Export to China

How to export coats from the UK to China

To export coats to China, settle the Chinese tariff line and sales route, prepare the UK export declaration and check GB 18401-2010 with your importer. MFN duty ranges from 6% to 10%; import VAT also shapes landed cost. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands.

Choose the route for your coats

For coats, jackets and outerwear, agree the Chinese tariff line and whether your buyer needs wholesale stock or a cross-border retail offer before quoting. Have the importer's customs broker confirm the requirements for each garment.

The largest UK export line listed here was 62014010, men's or boys' outerwear, at £496k in 2025; that is an HS-code total, not sales of your particular product.

The following figures cover UK exports under HS 6101-6202 (15 subheadings). HMRC recorded £1.9m of UK goods exports to mainland China under 15 HS6 subheadings in 2025 (2024: £5.8m, -66.8%). Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £12.0m. January to July 2026: £1.5m against £676k in the same months of 2025 (+118.7%).

Price against the Chinese tariff line

The listed MFN rates apply to the following Chinese tariff lines. Do not quote a single duty rate for your whole coat collection: 61019010 and 61019090 carry different rates, while the 620240 lines carry 9%. Match each garment to its Chinese line before agreeing the importer's purchase price.

The VAT Law's standard import VAT rate is 13%, subject to its exceptions. Import VAT is calculated on customs value plus customs duty plus consumption tax. The importer's customs broker or adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to these coats. Duty and import VAT add to landed cost and therefore shape the price the importer can offer.

Check textile safety before committing stock

GB 18401-2010, China's National General Safety Technical Code for Textile Products, is a current mandatory standard. Give your importer the coat specifications and available test evidence so it can arrange a review against the standard. Settle the applicable requirements with the importer before committing production or dispatch; use that review to identify any work needed on the garments.

Prepare the UK export declaration

For coats exported from England, Scotland or Wales, you need a GB EORI and the correct UK commodity code. The online export declaration requires the value, weight, packaging, destination, transport details and invoice and packing list references. Agree who will make the declaration and provide those details consistently across the shipment. The carrier needs the invoice and any applicable export licences or certificates.

Check which coats qualify for cross-border retail

Confirmed cross-border retail list matches are 61012000, 61013000, 61019090, 61021000, 61022000 and 61023000. Check your garment against the matched line rather than extending eligibility to the entire collection. Listed goods using bonded 1210 or direct 9610 are supervised as personal-use articles, with first-import licence, registration and filing requirements disapplied, except for suspended epidemic-area goods or emergency risk handling.

The overseas retail business carries the main product quality and safety responsibility. It must appoint a mainland-registered company to register with customs, declare truthfully and share civil liability. Establish those responsibilities with the retail partner before treating this route as a sales option.

Consumers must accept a risk notice before ordering: origin-country standards may differ from Chinese standards, goods may lack Chinese labels, and a Chinese electronic label can be viewed online. Purchases are for personal use and cannot be resold. The limits are RMB 5,000 per transaction and RMB 26,000 annually per person, so this route cannot supply your distributor's resale stock.

Find and check a Chinese trade partner

Give prospective importers a coat specification, the proposed tariff lines and the intended sales route, then establish who will review compliance and handle the shipment. Our own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands. If an importer has already approached you, our staff in China check that company before stock is sent or anything is signed.

Through our export-to-China service, we prepare registration and label work with licensed partners in China. The importer of record and, for the cross-border route, the cross-border e-commerce agent remain with licensed partners in China; the brand's own filings stay the brand's. We check with licensed partners.
