Getting started

Buying a desktop CNC router from China safely

Before ordering, agree the guard arrangement, emergency stopping and isolation, secure workholding, compatible cutters, dust extraction and noise controls for your actual room and materials. Arrange competent commissioning before cutting. Coordinate the factory evidence with Cambridge China Bridge.

Define the home workshop before choosing the machine

Describe your materials, intended cuts, room, electrical supply, bench and access arrangements. Include space for the enclosure, extraction hoses and loading stock. Plan to keep children, visitors and pets away during operation. Put the complete configuration into your product specification, including accessories that the factory might otherwise quote separately.

Private hobby use and business use at home are different situations. Keeping the machine for yourself does not settle the machinery compliance question. Our own-use importing guide covers that distinction. This guide adds practical purchasing checks; ask a machinery specialist to review the exact model and intended installation before committing.

Resolve guarding and stopping together

Ask for drawings showing protection from the rotating cutter, moving gantry and trapping points throughout machine travel. Prefer an assessed enclosure with controlled access and evidence that its panels can contain foreseeable ejected fragments. Ask how door interlocks prevent access while dangerous movement continues. A transparent cover or dust brush alone does not demonstrate suitable guarding.

HSE advises placing necessary emergency stop controls within easy reach. Specify a physical control reachable without crossing the cutting area. Ask an engineer to verify stopping of the spindle and axes, stopping performance, and restart behaviour after reset or power restoration. Require a deliberate restart. Agree a separate isolation procedure for tool changes and cleaning; a software pause or emergency stop is not your isolation procedure.

Specify restraint and cutter compatibility

Ask the factory to demonstrate workholding with your intended stock, including small pieces and parts released by the final cut. Agree clamps, fixtures or an assessed vacuum arrangement that keep stock secure throughout the toolpath. Check clearance between clamps, cutter, dust shoe and moving head. Never plan to hold the workpiece by hand while cutting.

Obtain cutter and collet compatibility information, permitted operating settings and fitting instructions. Check cutter condition, shank engagement and tightening as instructed. Include a plan for offcuts so they cannot become loose projectiles. Keep loose clothing and hair away from moving parts, and use suitable eye protection. Wait for movement to stop and follow isolation instructions before reaching inside.

Choose extraction for the material and installation

HSE's router guidance recommends effective local exhaust ventilation for wood dust. Specify capture at the cutting point, the extraction connection, required airflow, suitable filtration and a way to check performance. Have an extraction specialist match the hood, hose and extractor as a system. Do not assume a domestic vacuum or a dust shoe supplied with the router is sufficient.

Tell the specialist every material you intend to cut. Do not assume an arrangement for wood dust suits metal chips, plastics or composites. Agree safe collection, filter maintenance and waste handling, including relevant fire risks. Keep dust out of living areas. Plan vacuum cleaning rather than sweeping or blowing dust around, and ask whether suitable respiratory protection is needed alongside extraction.

Check cutting noise, extraction noise and vibration

HSE notes that noise levels vary with equipment and conditions of use. Request noise information for representative cutting, identifying the material, cutter, operating settings and extraction running during the assessment. An idle spindle recording cannot establish how the complete installation will sound. Phone recordings are useful for identifying rattles, but are not a hearing-risk assessment.

Plan the enclosure, stable bench and machine location before buying. Ask a specialist about vibration transmission, acoustic treatment and suitable hearing protection. Consider other occupants and neighbours as well as the operator. Check that any acoustic treatment preserves ventilation, extraction, visibility and access to controls. Do not promise quiet operation from an untested enclosure.

Agree a staged commissioning and release plan

Name the competent person who will check the delivered configuration, electrical installation, guards, interlocks, stopping and isolation. Agree safe test procedures with the manufacturer before energising. After those checks pass, verify axis direction, homing and travel limits, then run the programme clear of the workpiece with guarding active before a supervised trial cut. Our machinery commissioning guide covers the wider installation arrangements.

Record the actual model, fitted accessories, test conditions, results and unresolved faults. Stop commissioning if restraint fails, controls behave unexpectedly, extraction is ineffective or abnormal vibration occurs. Resume only after correction and repeat checks. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can gather configuration photographs and witnessed factory test evidence; retain local commissioning as a separate acceptance step.

Frequently asked questions

Does a home hobby CNC router need a guard?

Plan guarding for the cutter, moving axes and ejected fragments. Ask a machinery specialist to assess the exact configuration. A small machine or a transparent cover does not establish that access is safely controlled.

Is the CNC software stop button enough?

Specify a reachable physical emergency stop and have its spindle, axis and restart behaviour checked. Agree separate isolation for cleaning and tool changes; do not rely on a software pause.

Can I use a household vacuum for CNC dust?

Do not assume it is suitable. Have the extraction system matched to the material, capture hood, airflow and filtration needs, then verify its performance in the installed arrangement.

What should I test before the first CNC cut?

Have competent checks of installation, guarding, interlocks, stopping and isolation completed first. Then verify motion and programme clearance before a supervised trial with secure stock and working extraction.
