Getting started

Buying a defibrillator from China for a club

Before buying, verify the manufacturer and exact device, obtain model-specific UK regulatory evidence, and confirm replacement pads, batteries and local support. Name a maintenance custodian and agree storage and emergency access before paying. Coordinate supplier checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Verify the device, not just the seller

Ask for the manufacturer's identity, exact model, serial-number photographs and supply-chain records. Contact the manufacturer through independently found details to confirm the seller's authorisation and the unit's provenance. Establish whether it is new, refurbished, a demonstration unit or discontinued stock. Hold the purchase if labels, packaging and records disagree.

Specify a rescue device rather than a training device. Obtain English instructions and confirm English voice prompts, intended users and any child-use configuration with the manufacturer. Ask who provides UK warranty support and safety notices for this exact model. A factory visit or power-on video cannot establish clinical performance.

Build a file for the exact UK destination

For supply in Great Britain, ask the UK medicines and medical devices regulator, the MHRA, to confirm the registration requirements before the device is placed on the market and whether the overseas manufacturer must appoint a UK Responsible Person. Use our medical-device sourcing guide for the general importing roles, then ask for evidence covering this manufacturer and model. Specify the destination explicitly when seeking advice about Northern Ireland.

Manufacturers must meet the relevant marking and conformity-assessment requirements. Request the declaration of conformity, applicable conformity certificate and photographs of the actual labels. Have the proposed CE or UKCA route checked for the intended supply date, using our marking and document guide. MHRA registration does not mean MHRA approval. Verify certificate scope and validity directly with the issuer.

Secure replacement pads and batteries

Get manufacturer-confirmed part references for adult pads, any required child-use accessories and the battery. Request written confirmation of compatibility, replacement instructions and expiry dates on the goods being supplied. Ask what replacements are needed after use. Do not accept a similar connector or a seller's 'universal' claim as compatibility evidence.

Identify an accessible replacement supplier before ordering and obtain a separate consumables quotation. Agree who funds and orders replacements, what spare stock to keep, and how expiry reminders are recorded. Ask about support if the model is discontinued, repairs, software updates and a loan device during downtime. Compare the ongoing support package as well as the purchase quote.

Assign upkeep and approve the storage location

Name a custodian and deputy. Build the check schedule from the manufacturer's instructions, covering the ready indicator, pad seals and expiry, battery condition, damage and cabinet access. Record checks and faults. Agree who removes an unavailable device from service, arranges replacements and confirms readiness after use or repair.

Check the manufacturer's storage and operating limits against the proposed location, including cold, heat and moisture. Assess whether an outdoor cabinet needs heating, weather protection or an electrical supply. Walk the retrieval route and test access during club closures. Use our shared club equipment guide for venue permission, insurance and purchase authority.

Arrange ambulance visibility and a handover

The Circuit is a national defibrillator network linked to all UK ambulance services. Ask the local ambulance service about registering the club's device through The Circuit for its intended access arrangements. Prepare the exact location, actual availability, cabinet access details and guardian contact. Agree who keeps these details current when access or readiness changes.

Before opening access, reconcile the delivered serial number, labels, documents and consumable expiry dates with the approved order. Arrange a handover covering the manufacturer's checks, emergency retrieval and fault reporting; use a separate training device for practice. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate supplier records and shipment checks. Leave unresolved authenticity, regulatory or support gaps open until verified.

Frequently asked questions

How do we check a China-bought defibrillator is genuine?

Ask the manufacturer, using independently found contact details, to confirm the model, serial number, seller's authorisation and provenance. Match that response to the delivered unit and supply records.

Does MHRA registration mean a defibrillator is approved?

No. MHRA registration is not accreditation, certification, approval or endorsement. Obtain model-specific conformity documents and verify the applicable certificate with its issuer.

Can we use cheaper replacement pads or batteries?

Buy only after the manufacturer confirms compatibility with the exact model. Match part references and instructions, check expiry dates, and secure a replacement source before buying the device.

Should our club register its defibrillator with the ambulance service?

Ask the local ambulance service about The Circuit registration for your access arrangements. Provide accurate location, availability and cabinet access details, and name someone to keep the record current.
