How to advertise a lifetime guarantee in the UK
Explain whose lifetime is covered, what you will repair or replace, and the significant exclusions in the advert. Supply full terms before customers commit to the guarantee, and check that your supplier arrangements support your promise. Factory checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Define whose lifetime you mean
CAP guidance says the meaning of a guarantee should be clear to consumers. Before using ‘lifetime’, decide whether you mean the original purchaser’s life, their period of ownership, or a defined product service life. These are drafting choices, not interchangeable promises. Put the chosen meaning beside the claim.
If you mean product service life, explain how it ends and what evidence supports that definition. Avoid a circular promise that ends whenever the product fails. If your intended cover ends when your business stops trading, reconsider whether ‘lifetime’ communicates it clearly. A defined guarantee period may be easier to explain.
Show significant exclusions in the advert
ASA guidance requires significant limitations affecting consumers’ rights to be clear in the advert. It specifically gives parts cover without labour as an example. A ‘terms apply’ footnote should not be your only explanation of a limitation that changes what customers receive.
Review exclusions for normal wear, batteries, finishes, accidental damage and commercial use. Also check original-owner restrictions, registration conditions, maintenance requirements and return costs. These are examples to assess, not automatically acceptable exclusions. State the significant ones beside the claim and explain the detail in the full terms.
Make the full terms available before commitment
The CAP Code requires marketers to supply full terms before the consumer commits to taking up the guarantee. For online sales, place a clearly labelled guarantee-terms link beside the claim and make the terms readable before checkout. For printed adverts, explain how to obtain them before committing.
In the terms, identify the business providing the guarantee, its contact details, covered products, duration, territory and claim procedure. Explain whether the remedy is repair, replacement or refund, who pays transport and labour, and how replacement goods are covered. Test access on a phone and keep a dated copy of the wording used.
Match your promise to factory support
Do not simply translate a factory’s ‘lifetime warranty’ phrase onto your packaging. Ask for its actual coverage, exclusions, spare-parts arrangements and claim process. Decide who will handle UK customer claims and how you will fund promises that exceed factory support. Use agreeing warranty administration for the supplier arrangements.
Before approving artwork, work through a faulty item, a worn component and a discontinued model. Check whether your advertised remedy can still be delivered. For the operational planning, see spare parts and after-sales support and product discontinuation planning.
Keep consumer rights separate
Consumers’ statutory rights cannot be removed by your contract. Keep guarantee exclusions separate from the handling of statutory-rights claims, and avoid wording suggesting that an expired or unavailable guarantee ends all customer rights.
Before launch, compare the website, marketplace listing, packaging, guarantee document and customer-service replies. Check that they describe the same lifetime, exclusions and remedy. Ask someone unfamiliar with the product to explain what they think the promise means, then correct any mismatch.
Frequently asked questions
Does a lifetime guarantee mean the buyer’s lifetime?
Do not assume that meaning. Define whether your promise covers the purchaser’s life, their ownership or a defined product service life, and put that explanation beside the claim.
Can I put all lifetime guarantee exclusions in small print?
Significant limitations must be clear in the advert. Explain restrictions that change the cover beside the claim, then give the remaining detail in accessible full terms.
Can I provide guarantee terms after delivery?
That is too late if customers have already committed to the guarantee. The CAP Code requires full terms before that commitment; make them available during the buying process.
Can I advertise the factory’s lifetime warranty?
First check its definition, exclusions and claim process. Agree who supports UK customers, and advertise only the cover your arrangements can deliver.
